"Fond of all the expressions that form an athletic "body and soul" for tomorrow battles, enthusiastic about what it was difficult and harsh, he had been able to keep these feelings inside a refined soul, that could do any good and no harm."

Alfredo Dick, from a rich Swiss family, was born in Yverdon-les-Bains in 1865, but he soon moved to Turin. At the end of the century he committed to an entrepreneurial venture in the booming footwear industry. He founded the "MANIFATTURA DI PELLAMI E CALZATURE - SOCIETA' ANONIMA" (M.P.C.) developing a partnership with a pioneer of the shoe industry, Cavalier Pietro Giulini, owner in Vigevano of a company of the same name.

The company had its HQ in Via Santa Chiara, 76, while the production was located in a sizable factory built in the late nineteenth century at the intersection of the streets Industria, Pinelli, Miglietti and Bonzanigo. We gather from an old ad that there was a "daily production of 2,000 shoes per day for women, youngster, boys and kids, handmade or with M'kay system, backhand, stick of wood". It employed 700 workers between the Turin and Vigevano plants (beginning of '900).

Dick always accompanied his work with a great passion for sports, first of all football (soccer for the guys overseas). In 1897 he was among the founders of the Juventus Football Club, whose players were high school students of the wealthy Turinese families. Alfredo Dick set up a fund, provided strong organizational structure and human resources. In 1905 as president, he won the first national title - only 8 years after the team foundation - and his son Frédéric was among the players. Dick was also president in 1906.

However, in 1906, he caused the defeat in the final against A.C. Milan by forfeit, not having let Juventus play because of the harmful condition of the play field. The presidency wasn't renewed and a resented Dick left Juventus and contributed to establish the Torino Football Club. He also offered Turin the Juventus home-field (Velodrome Umberto I), that he personally rented.

In 1909 Alfred Dick became president of the newly formed "Association of Italian Footwear Manufacturers" (HQ at the same M.P.C. registered office, via Santa Chiara 76). The board included: Oreste Vitale (of Borri & Vitale, Busto Arsizio), Giovanni Gilardini of Turin, Ermenegildo Trolli, from Calzaturificio di Varese, cav. Pietro Giulini of Vigevano.

But dramatic events were about to happen the very same year.
As CEO of the "Manifattura Pellami e Calzature" Dick had made some ordering mistakes and, as a result, the company had a loss of nearly a hundred thousand lire. Saturday, August 7 Dick was summoned by the Administration Board in order to clarify what happened and he took full responsibility. Upset by the error more than by the economic damage, Dick went to his office at the Velodrome Umberto I the next day and shot himself in the temple. He was only 44 years old. He was survived by his wife and four children.

The Manifattura didn't stop after Dick's death and merged in 1937 with a Turin-based company called A.R.C.A. (Anonimous Footwear and Similar Resale) to develop its distribution. The factory was severely damaged by the allied aviation in December 1942 and July 1943, when the production was mainly for the German occupiers. The activities continued, however, until the 50s.
