Altro fatto che infastidisce, dappertutto, la completa ignoranza delle cose nostre. Dici: «La Terra», ti capiscono, sanno che è quella. Ma se dici: «L’Italia» loro dicono: «Che?». Gliela indichi al telescopio: «Italia, Stivale, Mediterraneo, Civiltà». Loro guardano e dicono: «Piccolo».
Non comprare mai niente. Tutto più caro che da noi, ovunque. Su Nettuno volevo comperare una cravatta, per ricordo: otto volte il nostro prezzo e poi, non era italiana? Su Giove, in una vetrina vedo un cappotto decente, ne avevo bisogno, mi avvicino, c’era scritto in francese: «Importé de la Terre». Vanno pazzi per la nostra eleganza, noi ci riconosciamo subito dalle scarpe. Loro portano zoccoli, ciabatte, barchette e le chiamano scarpe. Pensa.

Another fact that annoys me no end, everywhere, is the complete ignorance of our things. If you say: "The Earth", they understand you, they know what it is. Don't buy anything. It's more expensive than Earth, anywhere. While in Neptune I wanted to buy a tie, as a souvenir: eight times our price, and it was Italian! In Jupiter, I saw a decent coat in a shop window: I looked up the label and there it was in French:"Importé de la Terre" They go nuts for our elegance, we recognize ourselves because of our shoes. They wear clogs, slippers shaped like small boats, and they call them shoes. Think about it.

"Lo Spazio é Nostro" (The Space Is Ours) is a short story off "Ombre Bianche" (White Shadows) by novelist/journalist/screen writer Ennio Flaiano (La Dolce Vita, 81/2); set in Outer Space, it chronicles a short vacation running around the Galaxy to describe the many virtues and as many vices of his fellow Italians.
