ANSELMO RONCHETTI - SHOEMAKER (1773 – 1833) | PT 2

By Irma Vivaldi

ANSELMO RONCHETTI
Calzolaio nella Cerva al N.358 in Milano

[English Text below]

Partiamo dalle note biografiche.

Poco o nulla rimane. Quello che rimane scompare.

INDEX

The information available about Anselmo Ronchetti are really scarce. His birthplace, the town of Pogliano Milanese,  remembers him as follows:

Fatherless at a very young age, he studied briefly in Gorla Minore, but force mejeure led him to leave the college to become a shoemaker's apprentice. He moved to Milan, opened his own shop (Via Cerva), which quickly became, thanks to his passion for literature, the meeting place of famous writers and artists, including Carlo Porta. Ronchetti also became famous as a shoemaker. He died in Milan on August 19, 1833.
Not much to give an idea about who Ronchetti really was, so here we go with some more information.
In some libraries throughout Europe there still is a part of his letters exchanged with some remarkable figures of the time. An important help to find out who Ronchetti was comes from a nice book written by Luigi Medici in 1930: A historical shoemaker (Anselmo Ronchetti) - Como - Arti Grafiche Emo Cavalleri

Some biographical notes.
Carlo Ronchetti and Maria Gianni, Anselmo's parents, from Busto Arsizio (Varese), had an economic condition which allowed them, until the death of Carlo, to let their son to study at the Rotondi College in Gorla Minore (Varese), making him lay the foundation for a passion for study and culture that stayed with him forever.
Ronchetti, orphaned of his father, left college and was employed as an apprentice at a shoemaker who had his shop at the Carrobio, near the Porta Ticinese in Milan.
"But in his spare time, thirsty for knowledge, love of good letters and fascinated by the fine arts, used to read Frugoni and Segneri and never loose an opportunity to enrich his cultural knowledge of all those elements which were then offering his exquisite spirit, refined and open to all beauty, with so much joy in his maturity” [from "A historical shoemaker"]

From Carrobio to Via Larga, employed by another shoemaker, Ponti, until he opened his first shop at the Cinque Vie (San Maurilio area), helped by the loan of Don Gabrio Nava, the future Brescia bishop.
The courteous and nice Ronchetti manners, combined with his craftsmanship, got him a very good customer base, so that within a few years he was able to move to a new and better shop in the Contrada Durino (now Via Durini). However, once there, he risked   bankruptcy because of the looting of all his things, the shoes ready for sale, the hides and all tools.
Forced to start over, he did it in Via Cerva, where now there is the milanese street that bears his name, in the house annex to the converted church of S. Stefano in Burgundy (later demolished).
There he found his wife, Teresa Gamberelli, the daughter of his neighbor, an employee at the Zecca (the mint).
He maintained home and studio in Via Cerva until the end of his days with the children who were born one after another (they had 25!), gardening in the spare time, studying and continuing his work with non-stop success and more important customers.

One more thing: Ronchetti was buried in Port Tosa Cemetery (Port Victoria), which was razed in 1896 to make way for Milan development. The remains of all the exhumed bodies were gathered in the basement of the Church of “Santa Maria del Suffragio”, built where the cemetery once stood. Maybe, just maybe, this is the SS 33's destiny. Almost nothing is left. What's left it disappears.
