MILENA - FRATELLI NEBULONI
I N D E X
______________________________

Many Nebuloni families crowded the footwear production in the Parabiago area over the past century: some are still active, others are only a fading memory, like MILENA's Fratelli Nebuloni Shoe factory.

They started at the beginning of the Twentieth Century and over the years, the shoe factory MILENA produced under different brands/lines such as: “Milena” (1947), “Holiday” (1953), “Fratelli Nebuloni”, “Bortoloni”, “La Subacquea” (1956), “Subacquatic” (1958), “Bijou”, “G.T.Man”....

The last name change came post mortem due to a parody/tribute: the comedy "Che not tribulada!” [dialect for What a troubled night!] staged a few years ago by the Parabiago theater company, “I Sempr'Alegher” [again, dialect for Always Happy], was loosely based on the Nebuloni’s story, here renamed "The TENCIUNI”.

“La Subacquea” ("The Underwater") brand ruled the company's success in the '50s. It was a patent for a waterproof and ice-resistant shoe for men's dress shoes, but also used in casual/sport footwear. Milena shoes were part of the Italian expedition's uniform sponsored by Milan's Cai and Friars Minor Angelicum Film. They sailed from the port of Genoa, April 20, 1958 aiming to open new passages on the tops of the Andean Cordillera Apolombaba.

In those same years, the Nebuloni Brothers promoted the brand through trade fairs, including the local Parabiago Footwear Exhibition (from 1954 to 1959). Many awards came in the Sixties with the work of shoe designer Mauro Nebuloni. In 1967 they won the first prize at the Turin's International Footwear Academy led by the Commendator Agostino Puccio. The Academy gave the Nebuloni Brothers the Oscar for the best men dress and sporty shoe plus the Certificate of Honour for their contributions to the footwear art.

The following year the Academy gave the Milena Shoe Factory the Gold Medal at the first International High Fashion Leather Olympics.

In 1971, the Nebuloni Brothers were among the first signatories of the new mark "genuine leather".

Today, the former Milena factory plant is a Japanese restaurant.

1969 | [NOT] GENUINE LEATHER | DU PONT'S CORFAM AS SEEN BY ANDREA PFISTER AND ROGER VIVIER PLUS A GUEST APPEARANCE FROM FERRAGAMO

A New Material
Probably the most comfortable thing to wear will be Corfam, a new material that looks like leather but is not a substitute for it. It is rather an entirely new concept in shoe materials: it is lightweight, waterproof yet porous, soft yet can't lose its shape, and needs no breaking in. Its coming was first announced in this column back in October, and some Corfam shoes are indeed now in stores, but until completion of a plant now a-building, the supply is sorely limited by what the pilot plant is able to turn out.
Therefore retail stocks of it are spotty, that is, limited choice not only of styles and colors, but, and infinitely more serious, limited ranges of sizes. Since Corfam doesn't "give" the shoes have to be fitted very precisely. You may be lucky and find just what you want, but I'll hold off featuring them until I can be sure you can be fitted.

1969 | Launched in 1963 the Corfam was a synthetic substitute for leather. Du Pont invested a huge amount of money in research and marketing but the material lacked the leather flexibility and soon was dismissed as cheap. The high-end use in footwear was the very last chance but not even Andrea Pfister nor Roger Vivier (who was experimenting the material since 1965) could do nothing about the doomed material. The Corfam patent was sold in 1971 to a Polish firm.

Chains are the newest liked trimming on many of the high-risers. Andrea Pfister, the unlikely named young man who is also Patou's shoe designer, trims his ankle boots with heavy gold chains.

Paris shoe designers are going into many faces of Corfam in a big way. Unlike some of our top Americans who continue to turn their noses up at this man made material, which is difficult to understand since it feels feather-light to walk in and keeps its shape indefinitely.

Du Pont's choice for the Corfam catalog/palette was peculiar: Mocco Crocco (?), marble cobra (??) and alligator galore (Super'Gator, Duo'Gator and Baby'Gator).

1972 | LEZIONE DI STILE [ILLUSTRATA] | LESTER BANGS RECENSISCE I WHITE WITCH.

White Witch - 1972 - S/T (Capricorn)| BACK

The Astronauts - 1964 - Everythings is A-OK! (RCA Victor)

Dieci anni fa lo avremmo trovato su un disco degli Astronauts indossando una giacca gialla dal risvolto stretto;

The Beatles - 1964 - Meet The Beatles (Capitol)

cinque anni fa avrebbe provato imbarazzo per il suo nuovissimo caschetto alla Beatles;

Love Battery - 1994 - Nehru Jacket (Polygram)

White Witch - 1972 - S/T (Capricorn)| FRONT

Beatle pudding-bowl & nehru jacket

OK, ma come suonano i White Witch? Fantastici!

LOST FOREVER | 1985 | PARABIAGO FOOTWEAR MARK OF QUALITY

1985 | UN MARCHIO DI QUALITA' PER LE AZIENDE CALZATURIERE DELL'ALTOMILANESE

[Irma Vivaldi]

1985 | PARABIAGO CALZATURE LOGO

L to R: Vincenzo Di Nuzzo and Romano Rancilio (counselor)

dichiarò Tremolada in conferenza stampa.

PARABIAGO FOOTWEAR

Parabiago’s footwear history collects many episodes of association led by the enlightened principle that unity is strength.

The reality, however, always revealed the weakness of the efforts.

The Parabiago District it’s a constellation of micro/small enterprises, each one of them entrenched to defend alleged secrets about production; a never ending competition, overburdened by the daily grind and a perennial staff shortage. And finally: no resources for communication, promotion and associative activities.

Now, let's go back in time, to what happened 26 years ago.

1985: the decline of the footwear industry. It was necessary to find out solutions to beat the crisis and to promote the district's quality production.

Fratelli Rossetti, Riccardo Banfi and Luciano Padovan have their HQs here. Also made in Parabiago are the following: Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin, Hermès, Roberto Cavalli, Fendi, Chanel, Ralph Lauren, Sigerson Morrison, Arfango, Max Mara, Donna Karan, Laura Biagiotti, Heather Williams, Nicole Brundage, Olivia Morris, Georgina Goodman (now out of business) and many others. Insiders not included, who knows it?

Anyway, they came up with a Mark Of Quality under the patronage of the Export Consortium of Legnano (a local body within Confindustria, the main organization representing Italian manufacturing companies), then directed by Vincenzo Di Nuzzo, aimed to facilitate the export for member companies.

At the Micam International Exhibition, director Di Nuzzo, along with the two counselors - Pietro Tremolada and Romano Rancilio - announced in a press conference the birth of the brand:
“Calzature Parabiago (Parabiago Footwear)”.
A mark of origin for shoes, footwear machinery and accessories.

27 footwear factories (out of 120 operating in the district) and 8 related companies signed the mark, representing a stylized image of a shoe and a box.

They had the idea to promote it through Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. It was March 1985, 26 years ago. What happened then?

Said it before: what happens in Parabiago stays in Parabiago.
