IAN RILEN | PASSION BOOTS & BRUISES | THE ONLY X FACTOR WE LIKE | TBAMFW # 12 |

Ian Rilen & The Love Addicts
2004 - Passion Boots and Bruises (Phantom Records)

IAN RILEN was the X founder - Sydney's X (not Los Angeles' X) - whose "Aspirations" is an all time punk-rock cornerstone. Back in '77 he bailed out of Rose Tattoo, cofounded by him, because their choice of music wasn't hard enough.

Volatile, multitalented with a deep, gravel voice; his "Passion Boots & Bruises" although distant from the X sound is a ROCK album, powerful, distorted, soulful, built on the blues with Beefheartism here and there. Sooner or later it will be discovered. Even the cover is perfect, but here, we'll remember Ian Rilen because he passed away five years ago today - September, 30 2006 because of cancer.

1985 | A CADILLAC WALK WITH ITALIAN SHOES | MINK DE VILLE | TBAMFW #11

The cover shot was made by Jamie Morgan, London photographer, cofounder of the Buffalo collective, well known for shooting several influential covers for The Face magazine. He was also the author of three record sleeves for Joan Armatrading but his expertise was at the service of more commercial ensembles such as Culture Club, Soul II Soul and Simple Minds.

Mink De Ville

Mink Me Ville was Willie De Ville's first band. First GBGB's generation - good stuff - but here Willie played it dirty. "Italian Shoes" is an uncredited cover of New Orleans' Wild Magnolias "New Suits" with changed lyrics. Also, it's a flawed version: dreadful '80s sound with delay drenched drums, bloodless brass section and cheesy keyboards.

The Dynatones
1988 - Italian Shoes 12" (WB)

Tre anni dopo (1988) i Dynatones - gruppo white soul/rhythm & blues di San Francisco - hanno ripreso "Italian Shoes" - sempre attribuita a De Ville - come singolo tratto dall'album d'esordio "Shameless", oggi introvabile.La grafica é di Douglas Day, illustratore californiano, titolare dello studio D. Day Design; sua é la copertina di "South Of Heaven" (1994) degli Slayer.

Three years later (1988) The Dynatones - a white soul/rhythm & blues band from San Francisco - reworked "Italian Shoes" - still credited to De Ville - as a single off the long time out of print debut album "Shameless". Cover design by Douglas Day, Californian illustrator, owner of the D. Day Design studio and author of Slayer's "South Of Heaven" cover drawing (1994).

FOOTNOTE

"Cadillac Walk" is here for a reason and not because De Ville wearing Chucks: it's a selection of the first three Mink De Ville albums, their best. When you're finished, explore the solo repertoire; you won't be disappointed, no "Italian Shoes" on sight.

ANDY WARHOL | POP ARTisan | IT'S ALL ABOUT SHOES |

Andy Warhol:

Thursday, July 24, 1980
Rupert (Jasen Smith Jr.) brought the proofs for the prints by that he’d taken it upon himself to finish completely without ever showing them to me. He tried to be artistic and he sure was, he sure was. This is the Shoes with the diamond dust. He had them completely finished, with the diamond dust on and everything. I don’t know why he did that. I’m doing shoes because I’m going back to my roots. In fact, I think maybe I should do nothing but (laughs) shoes from now on.

1970: at the peak of its success, the Titano shoe factory produced, under different brand names, sports and elegant shoes.
Its quality originated in the '20s but the architects of the highly innovative design were Salvatore Deodato and Armando Alberti, in cooperation with Adriano Sciuccati, Titano's creative owner.

The shoe factory became a crossroad for the biggest names in sport of the era. First stop is dedicated to cyclists: Adriano Sciuccati welcomes Eddy Merckx “the Cannibal”Gianni Motta and Michele Dancelli, three members of the glorious Molteni prize-winning team.

THE MASTER ARTISAN FROM VIGEVANO: CARLO CACCIOLA | THE SHOE MAKER WALTEA

L'ALTRO MAESTRO DI VIGEVANO: CARLO CACCIOLA | WALTEA

WALTEA
MADE IN VIGEVANO

Carlo Cacciola believed that his shoes were the best in Vigevano from a technical point of view. He was probably right. His company - WALTEA - could manage at least a thousand pairs a day but for the sake of quality he used to produce a little more than a hundred.

On the other end the production could not expand more: in the Waltea area (Vigevano), most of the workspace was taken by a huge warehouse for thousands of wooden lasts, on which the shoes were built and had to stay at least for a week to take the required form.

The Waltea factory closed down, after more than half a century of glorious career, at the beginning of the new Millennium. Until the very end, Cacciola was faithful to the classic materials: wood, superior leather and quality fabrics.

Carlo Cacciola studied at the Roncalli Institute of Vigevano with prof. Felice Minola on how to become a shop foreman. He should be remembered in the footwear history annuals (if such things exist) for being among the first developers of the stiletto heels in the early '50s, when he realized the proposed models by the Bologna designer Luciano Volta. Cacciola models went on exhibit as early as January 1953 at the 16th International Exhibition of Footwear of Vigevano

Calzature affusolate, semplici o delicatamente ricamate.

He peaked in the Sixties, especially in Milan, where he worked with several designers of the time. Over the years he remained faithful to a style of extraordinary elegance, never over the top: slender shoes, simple or delicately embroidered.

Carlo Cacciola passed away in December 2008, aged 86.

"It a great loss. Cacciola was the first in Vigevano to establish a modern factory with marble and air conditioning. He was a great connoisseur, a shoe lover. Some time after his closing, he came to me and said: "Let me in your factory, because I have to smell the shoes otherwise I'd be sick. I miss it too much."

We would like to thanks Armando Pollini, artistic director of the Footwear Museum of Vigevano, for the priceless assistance.

CANNES FESTIVAL | 1961 | THE FOOTPRINT |

AL FESTIVAL DI CANNES | 1961 | L'ORMA |

1961 | L'Orma - Gamma Film | The Footprint |

Actually, the other Cannes Festival - today called International Creativity Festival - was established in 1954 under the moniker International Advertising Film Festival.

An article from the weekly Domenica del Corriere (July, 2 1961) reports that two Italian movies were awarded at the 1961 edition; the first one was called "L'Orma" (The Footprint), commissioned by a shoe factory, the second was ordered by a scooter manufacturer. Both factories unnamed. No other info in the main article, whose focus was on the advertisement industry being more and more invasive.

Domenica Del Corriere
 July, 2 1961

"L'Orma" was supposed to be viewed before the feature films in theaters: it was directed by Gino Gavioli and Nino Piffarerio (screen writer) for Gamma Film, an historical Italian company famous for the Carosello commercials (a segment broadcasted right before prime-time). The movie can't be found anywhere on the net.

We'd like to know the shoe maker's name who commissioned "L'Orma", so if you have information, drop us a line.

FOOTNOTES

If you find intriguing the picture of the couple floating in the air, you can see the whole commercial here; called "Magic Ride", it's General Motors introducing the new Chevrolet.

I BOSSI | VIGEVANO | THE NEW BRAND AFTER OTTORINO BOSSI

1987 | I BOSSI
Vigevano

Right after Ottorino Bossi's death, his daughter Bruna managed the company for a few years. She was already involved as a designer, especially for bags.

The new management tried to increase production and created a new brand, "I Bossi", but the experiment didn’t last long. After a couple of years, Bruna decided to follow another career path, away from the world of shoes.
