1973 | ALDO SACCHETTI FOR SANLORENZO | PART 1: THE ARTICULATED SOLE

[Simonetta Conti - La Stampa – 9 febbraio 1973]

Turinese master artisan Aldo Sacchetti created for the 1973 S/S fashion shows in Rome a peculiar ankle shoe.
“Should be worn with trousers, especially during the summer. It is made of colorful denim fabric; it has a traditional and casual shape, open sides and fixed to the ankle by a high strap.”
The originality lies in the sole. The heel is made of raw wood, same material for the articulated wedge moderately height (2 cm max). A clever trick that makes the shoe flexible and the price very high: about 30.000 lire.
[Simonetta Conti - La Stampa – 9 febbraio 1973]

Aldo Sacchetti had been co-operating with several Turin maisons (Naldoni, Tivioli, Togno, Viscardi, Sanlorenzo) starting from the second half of the 60s and he helped them with their debuts at the High Fashion shows in Florence and Rome.

In 1973 Sacchetti designed these sandals, for the Spring/Summer collection, showcased in Rome, made of the same cloth of the Sanlorenzo outfit, whose particularity is the articulated sole.

The idea of the articulation of the sole is pretty clever, but nothing new: even so, Sacchetti must be credited to bring it back. André Perugia, although not the inventor, had thought about it forty-five years before.

According to Istat (Italian Institute of Statistics), today the hand-made sandals by Sacchetti would roughly cost € 230. What would you buy in these days for such a price?
