1973 - SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE - Fresh
(Epic) |
In qualunque momento”.
The last great record by the funk/soul innovator. Photo by Richard Avedon.
Sly Stone: “Richard Avedon is the greatest photographer in the world. After he shot the pictures for my album, Richard Avedon told me that he would shoot anybody I wanted him to shoot anytime."

1970 - THE JAZZ CRUSADERS
Old Socks New Shoes New Socks Old Shoes (Chisa/Verve)
|
In “Old Socks” c’é la cover di “Thank You” di Sly And The Family Stone, giusto per stabilire connessioni. I Jazz Crusaders sono quelli di “Street Life”, il brano che un pubblicitario idiota e musicisti compiacenti hanno trasformato in Spritz Life.
“Old Socks” includes Sly’s “Thank You”. The Crusaders are well known in Italy these days because a slaughtered version of their “Street Life” is being used for a drink commercial.

1981 - MINOR THREAT - Minor Threat
(Dischord Records) |
HarDCore legend from Washington DC. The iconic picture was taken by Susie Josephson Horgan; it portrays Alec MacKaye (singer for Faith and Ignition), Ian’s brother, singer for Minor Threat. The original sleeve was red. Shown here is the 12”/CD re-release because of its “analogy” with Nike’s dirty trick. Soon after the band’s complain Nike issued a formal apology.

1995 - RANCID - ...And Out Come The Wolf
(Epitaph Records) |
On the other hand, this is a tribute. Third album from the Berkeley band. Photo by Epitaph Records’ favourite photographer/graphic designer, Jesse Fischer. The album title is a direct quote from the song “Junky Man” written by Jim Carroll with the band.

1991 - 411 - This Isn’t Me
(Workshed) |
Il gruppo di Dan O’Mahoney successivo a No For An Answer e Carry Nation.
Dan O’Mahoney’s band after No For An Answer and Carry Nation. More melodic punk rock, yet very good. File next to Dag Nasty. Cover photo by Dan O’Mahoney.

1978 - THE ZEROS
Beat Your Heart Out/ Wild Week-End 7" (BOMP)
|
Alright, you can barely see the shoes. Like we care. Second single from one of the best punk-rock bands of all time.
The Zeros went on to record a second single with Bomp! Records, “Wild Weekend” b/w “Beat Your Heart Out.” The front sleeve showed our pointy toed shoes - we would buy new old stock in Tijuana - and the back showed our home away from home, the infamous Plunger Pit.

1977 - MENACE - Insane Society/Screwed Up
(Illegal)
|
Same as above; other side of the pond. Brillant debut single - two punk anthems actually - by the well known London band.

1982 - ABRASIVE WHEELS
When The Punks Go Marching In (Riot City Records)
|
La copertina però é la ristampa in vinile a cura dell’italiana Get Back (1997).
First album from the legendary punk band from Leeds. This is not the original sleeve on Riot City Records, but the vinyl re-release from the Italian label Get Back (1997).

1971 - LEGEND - Red Boot
(Vertigo) |
Mickey Jupp’s band before going solo. Out of fashion at the time, “Red Boot” (unofficial title given by the fans) remains a great R&R/R&B album unaffected by the years. Cover shot by KARL STOECKER, the photographer who did all the Roxy Music photo covers.

1991 - MICKEY JUPP
As The Yeahs Go By (On The Beach Recordings)
|
Mickey vent’anni dopo.
Mickey 20 years later. The music is less brilliant but album title and illustration are pure genius. Artwork by PETER KNOCK, artist and illustrator whose clients list include Esquire, Rolling Stone, Sunday Times.

1991 - VV.AA. - Gabba Gabba Hey
A Tribute to the Ramones (Triple X Records)
|
Ancora All Star.
More vintage All Star. Before Nike, rest assured. This is the first tribute album to the mighty Ramones. Like all tribute albums, it sucks in spite of the stellar roster (Bad Religion, D.I., Flesh Eaters, Poison Idea, Creamers ...).

1981 - CHELSEA - Alternative Hits
(Step Forward) |
The end of the second part and - like the first one - a cover without shoes (it’s going to be a tradition). Second album from Gene October’s Chelsea. It collects the first 6 singles plus two unreleased tracks.
