INTRODUCING DESIGNER LUIGI PROVERBIO | TANAGRA/YVES JEAN CLAUDE | CERRO MAGGIORE, MILAN

Luigi Proverbio, from Cerro Maggiore, Milan, is one of the names to be reckoned with in the history of the Italian shoe design. He started with a collaboration with the shoemaker Ursus Cuoio from Vigevano  in 1954 and thus the year 2014 marks his 60th anniversary of professional designing.

TANAGRA Chaussures
Paris - Cerro Maggiore, Milan

Luigi Proverbio won the distinguished Italian Footwear Oscar awarded by the International Footwear Academy in 1963. Eventually he spent his career designing and consulting for shoe factories all over Italy, particularly from Vigevano and the Marche region (among others: Sergio Rossi, Paciotti, Neptune, Sassetti). Proverbio also created his own brands (Yves Jean Claude, Tanagra, Clap) and he was in charge of training projects regarding handicraft shoe production to support communities in developing Countries.

Luigi Proverbio also associated with Chaussures Tanagra
"Chaussures Tanagra was first named Joseph Ast & Sons at the same address 23 Rue de la Mare. After Joseph’s son Henri decided to open his own manufacture, Joseph turned it to his wife Fanny and son in law Paul Davideau."

This comes first hand from New York's Marc H. Ast, whose great grand father was Joseph Ast, Fanny his great aunt and Paul his uncle.
"Paul and Fanny had a long association with Luigi whom I met many decades ago at the Semaine du Cuir in Paris which I visited every year. I also visited the manufacture Rue De La Mare as a kid to get my 'back to school' shoes. Later Paul and Fanny sold the manufacture then retired to the French Côte d’Azur. The family continued well into the 1980’s with the House of Renast."

Luigi Proverbio is a mine of priceless information about history of the shoe industry. Also, in stark contrast to the M.O. of the Milan area (SS33), with archivist skills, he kept a huge collection of his own models that any costume/fashion museum worth its name had to have. Luigi opened his archive to us and started to tell his story. Starting from HERE.
