Giorgio Rancilio, poco più che ventenne proprietario del Calzaturificio Rancir, puntava da tempo a produrre calzature dedicate al mondo dei giovani. Creò quindi il marchio TEENS (1969) che ripropose - anche troppo fedelmente - i fermenti e l'estetica della nuova moda californiana di Rudy Gernreich.

In his early twenties, Giorgio Rancilio, owner of the shoemaker Rancir, was looking forward to increase a youth-oriented production. He then created the brand TEENS (1969) that immediately embraced - even too faithfully - the new credo from California spearheaded by Rudy Gernreich.

Nello stesso periodo (primi mesi del 1970) e in circostanze sconosciute, Giorgio Rancilio entra in contatto con il pittore basco FERNANDO GUTIERREZ DE VELASCO formatosi alla scuola di Juan Mirò e da sempre associato a José Ortega, altro nome tutelare della pittura spagnola, molto conosciuto anche in Italia.

Around the same time (beginning of the year 1970) Rancilio met the Basque painter FERNANDO GUTIERREZ DE VELASCO, a Juan Mirò alumnus and associate of the Spanish painter José Ortega.

De Velasco, nato nel 1938, ha già alle spalle una vita tragica e avventurosa: alla fine degli anni '50 - dopo un diverbio di natura politica con il padre - abbandona la casa dei genitori e si trasferisce in Messico. Dipinge nello studio di David Alfaro Siqueiros assorbendone la forte connotazione sociale e politica. Tornato in Spagna sperimenta la triste realtà quotidiana perché il regime franchista, non tollerando i suoi dipinti di denuncia, lo incarcera. Non appena liberato lascia il Paese e si rifugia a Parigi dove lavora nello studio di José Ortega.

Born in 1938, De Velasco was a character larger then life: at the dawn of the Fifties he left his parent's home after a political contrast with his father; he went to Mexico and started working in the studio of social realist painter David Alfaro Siqueiros living and breathing anti-dictatorship sentiments. Back in Spain he started painting against the Franco regime and was promptly incarcerated. He left Spain once again as soon as he was released and went to Paris to work with his mentor José Ortega.

L'incontro con Giorgio Rancilio rappresenta una novità senza precedenti per il distretto parabiaghese: per la prima volta un artista collabora con il mondo industriale e per di più in un ambito - quello calzaturiero - da sempre guardato con sufficienza.

The meeting of Giorgio Rancilio and De Velasco was a novelty in the Parabiago footwear district: for the first time an artist worked closely with the industry, the footwear industry, still considered second rate back then.

In realtà, oltre alle foto, non c'é rimasto molto altro per cui non sappiamo come la collaborazione si sia sviluppata. Possiamo solo osservare la comunicazione commerciale dei marchi Teens/Rancir che enfatizza i concetti di libertà e anticonformismo.

Unfortunately we can't further elaborate: what's left are just a few pictures and no statements. We can only look at the Rancir ads noting the emphasis on freedom and renegade attitude.

anche se minuscolo, il logo non è quello di Chanel.

Un semplice scudo crociato era invece il logo usato negli anni ’60 da René Mancini, un bottier di origine italiana, che nel 1936 aveva aperto una bottega a Parigi. Lì i suoi modelli furono notati dalla madre dello stilista Pierre Balmain, che lo mise in contatto col figlio, dando il via ad una strepitosa carriera, come creatore di calzature per i più famosi marchi della moda francese, in particolare Givenchy, Balenciaga e soprattutto Coco Chanel.

even if the logo is tiny, it's not Chanel's.

A simple cross & shield logo was used by René Mancini in the 60's, a shoe maker of Italian origin, who open shop in Paris back in 1936. His models were spotted by Pierre Balmain's mother who hooked up the shoe maker with her son, giving way to a terrific career. Soon after, Mancini designed shoes for brands such as Givenchy, Balenciaga and - most important - Coco Chanel.

Proprio per Coco Chanel René Mancini, alla fine degli anni ’50, aveva disegnato il “sandalo Chanel”, la calzatura bicolore destinata ad un successo che dura ancora oggi. L’idea alla base del sandalo era favorire l’effetto ottico di allungamento della gamba grazie alla scelta di un colore in tinta con le calze.

The well known two-tone black & beige Chanel sandal was designed by Mancini at the end of the 50's and still carries today its charm. The color beige was chosen to match the stockings color in order to guarantee longer legs.

Mancini produced three lines: the top of the class was simply called with his own name and sported the cross & shield on the left of the name; the second, for the American market (Bonwit Teller for instance), was "Creation Mancini" (logo between the two words and address written on a curved line;

infine c’era la linea “Boutique Mancini”, sviluppata per le collezioni degli stilisti, con scudo centrale e indirizzo scritto in linea retta, che è esattamente quello delle calzature nel film di Truffaut.

the third was "Boutique Mancini" for creations commissioned by fashion designers (logo same as the previous one but address written on a straight line) which is the one you see in the Truffaut movie.

To tell the whole truth, it's still an open debate about the one who invented the two-tone Chanel sling backs: the other contender is Raymond Massaro, son of Raymond, historical cobbler in Paris.

"The Velvet Underground" é il libro del giornalista Michael Leigh (1963, Macfadden Books) da cui Andy Warhol - pare - abbia preso il nome per il celebre gruppo newyorkese nato due anni più tardi [1]. Il libro esplorava il Sogno Americano (segreto) attraverso i comportamenti sessuali nell'età moderna. La quarta di copertina recitava:

"Vieni Alla Festa -- E Porta Tua Moglie! Un invito innocente in qualsiasi lingua del mondo, se non fosse che "festa" significa "orgia" e "porta tua moglie" implica che verrà prestata a qualcun altro per la serata".

Tra i temi trattati: scambi di coppia, omosessualità, sado-masochismo, travestitismo; in altre parole, rock & roll.

"The Velvet Underground" is a book by journalist Michael Leigh (1963 Macfadden Books) from which Andy Warhol took the name for the celebrated New York band two years later. So goes the legend [1]. The book explored the (secret) American Dream identified with the sexual behaviors in the modern age. The cover text says:

"Come to the party -- and bring your wife … an innocent-sounding invitation in any man's language. Except when "party" spells "sex orgy" - and "bring your wife" means she's to be swapped for someone else for the night".

Among the topics: couple-swapping, homosexuality, sadomasochism, cross-dressing: the ideal setting for a rock band.

La porta che apriva il mondo sotterraneo era l'efficace immagine di copertina creata dal PAUL BACON STUDIO di New York. Paul Bacon era (é) un fantastico grafico/musicista/insegnante che ha realizzato migliaia di copertine sia per l'editoria che per l'industria musicale. Tra le tantissime memorabili ricordiamo quelle di Thelonious Monk ("Monk's Music" 1957, "Thelonious Alone In San Francisco" 1977); Bobby Timmons ("This Here Is Bobby Timmons" 1960) e persino dei Bad Brains, uno dei gruppi sinbolo del punk-hardcore americano ("Rock For Light" 1983, "I Against I" 1986, "Quickness" 1989).
Lo Studio ha chiuso nel 1992, ma Bacon, nato nel 1923, continua a lavorare a progetti occasionali.

The door that leads to the underground world was the iconic image created by the PAUL BACON STUDIO from New York. Paul Bacon was (is) a great illustrator/graphic designer/musician/teacher who did thousands of book and album covers. Among the most memorable: Thelonious Monk's "Monk's Music" (1957) and "Thelonious Alone In San Francisco" (1977); Bobby Timmons's "This Here Is Bobby Timmons" (1960) and surprisingly, many albums of the legendary American punk-hardcore band Bad Brains (Rock for Light" 1983; "I Against I" 1986; "Quickness" 1989).

The Studio closed shop back in 1992 but Bacon - born 1923 - still works on occasional projects.

Non c'é niente di più Made In Italy di un bootleg: la normativa lasca lo consentiva e in molti ne hanno approfittato. I tipi della Easy Flyte Records sono stati i primi (1986) ha riutilizzare l'immagine di Bacon per un live dei Velvet Underground registrato a Columbus (Ohio) nel 1966. Poi, come spesso accade di questi tempi, i tedeschi ci hanno superato e persino doppiato con Live In Columbus (Part I & II, 1998 Mind The Magic Records: medesimo concerto, ma pubblicato per intero.

Nothing is more Made In Italy than a bootleg record: a flawed copyright law permitted it and it was heaven on hearth for many. The Italian guys from the label Easy Flyte Records were the first to use the Bacon image for a live Velvet Underground album recorded in Columbus, Ohio back in 1966. Only later the Germans caught up and eventually double up the ante with "Live in Columbus" (Part I & II, 1998 Mind The Magic Records): same concert but released in its entirely.

L'immagine di Bacon é stata anche utilizzata dagli irlandesi Whipping Boy [2] per il loro debutto con la cassetta-singolo "Sweet Mangled Thing" (1989). Nel 2001 é infine apparso un altro bootleg dei Velvet, "Something Different" che conteneva brani già apparsi nel cofanetto ufficiale "Peel Slowly And See" (1995 Polydor, 5XCD).

Bacon's image was also used by the Whipping Boy [2] for their debut "Sweet Mangled Thing" (1989, Cassette-single,). Finally, in 2001, yet another VU bootleg album appeared called "Something Different" with tracks taken from the official box set "Peel Slowly And See" (1995 Polydor, 5XCD).

They finally settled on the Velvet Underground after a trashy book about sadomasochism by Michael Leigh, a copy of which Tony Conrad had found lying in the street on Bowery.

"The name was chosen because it sounded nice and it alluded to the underground scene in cinema. And we had Venus In Furs written already [Itself inspired by Sacher-Masoch's notorious book of the same name]. The band never set out to be devoted to sexual weirdness. It was a purely literary exercise".

Georges Tabard, proprietario a Parigi di un negozio di calzature di successo, sente di essere disprezzato dalle persone che lo circondano, in particolare dai suoi dipendenti. Vuole scoprirne le ragioni e sapere se c'è invece qualcuno che gli voglia bene. Perciò si rivolge all’agenzia di investigazioni private per cui lavora - con scarso successo - Antoine Doinel. L’investigatore viene assunto come commesso del negozio di calzature, per poter osservare in incognito le persone che circondano Tabard.

Jean Pierre Léaud, nei panni di Antoine Doinel, il personaggio alter-ego di François Truffaut e protagonista in cinque dei film del regista, incontra per la prima volta Fabienne Tabard, interpretata dall’attrice Delphine Seyrig, e ne rimane stregato.

Georges Tabard, owner of a successful shoe store in Paris, feels to be despised and not respected by the people around him, especially his employees. He wants to discover the reasons and to find out if there is someone who loves him. So, he hires the private detective agency where Antoine Doinel, with little success, works.

Jean-Pierre Léaud, in the role of Antoine Doinel, François Truffaut's alter-ego and star in five films of the director, meets for the first time Fabienne Tabard, played by Delphine Seyrig, who bewitches him.

Costretto una sera a fermarsi fino a tardi nel magazzino per finire un lavoro, Antoine sente un rumore nel negozio chiuso.

Forced to stop one evening in the storeroom to finish a job, Antoine hears a noise coming from the shop.

Fabienne: "Antoine, vero? Che gliene pare di queste scarpe? Troppo dorate per il vestito, eh? Eh, sì, sì, ha ragione, sono troppo dorate."

Fabienne: "Antoine, right? What do you think of this shoe? The gold color's too much for this dress? You're right."

Fabienne: "Mi vada a prendere un paio di scarpe come queste ma con la punta di raso nero, 4 1/2. D’accordo?"

Fabienne: "Let's try something else. Find me a pair like these, but with a black satin toe, in a 4 1/5. All right?"

Here they are. 

Missione compiuta. Fabienne se ne va. Ai suoi piedi le scarpe scelte, un paio di sandali Chanel, di cui uno si vede anche in vetrina.
CHANEL? Sicuri?

Mission accomplished. Fabienne leaves. The chosen shoes at her feet, a pair of Chanel sandals. You can spot one in the window.
CHANEL? Are you sure about that?

Nell'ultimo fotogramma si intravede il nome del negozio che ospitò le riprese e che ancora oggi è attivo a Parigi. Si tratta del negozio Maralex, in rue de la Pompe, specializzato in calzature per bambini.

In the last frame we can partly read the name of the store that hosted the shooting and that is still active in Paris. It's  the Maralex footwear shop, located in rue de la Pompe and specialized  in children's shoes.
