The Rotelli company was founded in 1950 in Morazzone (Varese) and specialized in the production of elegant women footwear. The founder and manager was Cesare Rotelli helped by his brothers.
In 1961 Ars Sutoria magazine wrote an extensive piece about the company, which then employed a hundred workers, reporting about the high quality of its production.

The personal touch

Una volta i bravi artigiani ritoccavano personalmente le forme in legno, un'attività oggi certamente non comune, ma Cesare Rotelli si spingeva oltre occupandosi direttamente della realizzazione delle forme, dalla cui perfezione - era solito dire - dipendeva il successo della calzatura. Inoltre decise di mantenere in azienda l’intero processo, inclusa la produzione dei tacchi. Proprio per i tacchi riuscì a trovare soluzioni tecniche innovative che gli consentirono di cavalcare con successo il mercato calzaturiero degli anni ’50 che richiedeva supporti sempre più sottili. Fu in quegli anni che si definì la struttura del tacco a spillo.
The skilled craftsmen used to adapt personally the wooden lasts, something very unusual today but Cesare Rotelli pushed even further, dealing directly with the making of lasts, the perfection of which is guarantee for a successful shoe. He also decided to keep the whole process in-house, including the heels production. Rotelli found innovative technical solutions that allowed the company to go along with the footwear market trends of the 50s like the stiletto heel (the thinner, the better).

ROTELLI'S VISION
“Questa generale tendenza dell’industria [di spingere al massimo ogni processo produttivo ndr] è data da necessità di riduzione dei costi di produzione, però bisogna tener presente che l’affermazione della calzatura italiana è dovuta proprio alla sua particolare caratteristica di estrosità e qualità. Ritengo perciò che l’industrializzazione dei nostri settori di produzione debba essere contenuta entro precisi e determinati limiti (…).
Uno dei presupposti indispensabili per conservare sempre inalterati i pregi qualitativi della calzatura italiana è la disponibilità di una capace ed abile maestranza e bisogna soprattutto pensare alla sua continuità. La nostra attuale maestranza proviene per la maggior parte da un’industria semi-artigianale del passato; è necessario però prevenire oggi le future necessità tramandando quest’arte ai nuovi giovani con speciali metodi didattici e tecnici; è impellente il problema di avere scuole professionali e di organizzare presso le singole industrie corsi appositi di specializzazione.”

I therefore consider that the industrialization of our production must be kept within well defined limits. (…).
One of the prerequisites to keep intact the qualities of Italian footwear is the availability of capable and skillful workers and above all we must think about its continuity. Our employees come mostly from the semi-handicraft industry of the past; Today, however, it is necessary to forecast the future needs teaching this art to a new generation with new educational and technical methods. A most urgent problem is to create professional schools and to promote specialization courses at the industries."

La produzione calzaturiera della Rotelli è proseguita fino all’inizio degli anni ’80. Poi è sopravvissuto solo il settore della produzione di macchine per la lavorazione di componenti per calzature.
Rotelli’s footwear production went on until the early
80s. After that, survived only the production of machines for the manufacture of footwear components.
