Founded in 1955, January 24, by Luigi Grassi, the shoefactory "Davos" was among the best known footwear factories in San Vittore Olona, Milan. The first lab was in Mentana street with three employees. The owner's father, Celestino, was a producer of golf shoes.

In the Sixties, thanks to the resourcefulness and creativity of Luigi Grassi, the shoes with the "Barrow's" brand conquered Italian and found its way abroad. Meanwhile, the employees had risen to 35.

A proof of the excellent quality level achieved by the shoe factory came in July 1963, when a telegram arrived at the new headquarters in Sempione street: the U.S. president John F. Kennedy wanted a pair of moccasins like the pair bought in Paris four years before.

In the Seventies the number of employees rose to 44 and five external laboratories helped to produce about 1000 pairs of shoes a day. In those years the shoes branded "Barrow's" were copied by all the local footwear producers, so that the owner was forced to limit the sale only to authorized dealers.

The shoefactory from San Vittore Olona continued the production for many years, until, thanks to massive advertising campaigns, the (so called) imported American shoes won the market. In 1985 the company changed its name to "Davos Srl" and Luigi entered into a partnership with his wife and sons. On May 13 the company was wound up.

The Friar In Barrow'sBoots

Father Eligio, they say you embraces girls, drink champagne, say f-words, appears in uninhibited parties, drive a Jaguar, mingle with jet-society. Also you wear Barrow's boots (shame!) instead of humble sandals. In any case you suffer from a bad press. Once they even wrote that you raised your cassock to show your red underwear ...

That was just the beginning of a question to father Eligio (Angelo Gelmini), former priest Pierino Gelmini's brother and Milan football club former spiritual adviser.
