EUROPE: MADE IN LABEL (Let's start from scratch, OK?)

[ENGLISH TEXT BELOW]

01 - AZIONE
Commercio estero/internazionale − 21-10-2010
Sessioni plenarie

01 - ACTION
External/international trade − 21-10-2010
Plenary sessions
Goods imported from outside the EU should clearly state their country of origin, to help consumers make informed choices, say MEPs. Parliament is proposing to allow the country of origin to be indicated in English on labels of goods sold anywhere in the EU. It would also like to see harmonised penalties for breaching the rules.
Next steps
The draft law still needs to be approved by the Council, where some Member States are still opposed to the idea of a European "made in" law.
Once finally adopted by both Parliament and Council, the new rules will be applicable in all Member States starting one year after publication in the EU Official Journal.
02 - reACTION
They tried with no luck: the Foreign Trade Association was not happy about the above mentioned draft law. Not that it's important to know, but if you really need it, find here what they want and here their associated
03 - (no)FX
The following is the key line:
The new law will apply only to goods destined for final consumers but not to products from the European Union, Turkey, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein.
(By the way: this part was OMITTED in the Italian translation)
Good news? Ask the people who lost their jobs because their firms moved production abroad. Tell the OMSA workers for instance (Golden Lady Group - stockings - 50% market share in Italy): the company moved production to Serbia (yeah rigth, not yet EU but yesterday they got the green light to speed up the procedure for the European Union’s accession; as soon as Serbia is in, no more labelling will be necessary. And what about Turkey? Don’t you worry. Already in!
So, in the end, what’s gonna change? A semi-product is not for the final consumer - it’s not labelled - it coud be processed (just once) - and magically became a “Made in Italy” product.
Those nice lobbyists at the Foreign Trade Association can sleep tight.

WAY TO GO

…BERTELLI IS UNAPOLOGETIC ABOUT HIS DECISION TO MAKE SOME PRODUCTS ABROAD — AS LONG AS THERE ARE QUALITY CONTROLS.

“If a product is made in Italy, then we’ll put the ‘made in Italy’ tag; if it’s made in China, we’ll put the ‘made in China’ tag, and if it’s made in Turkey, we’ll say so. Others aren’t as honest, but you see, Miuccia and I have never thought of our public as idiots.”

Yes, this is the way to go: autoregulation is much much better than a silly law. And don't forget controls on contractors, sub contractors and sub – sub contractors. We’re not idiots: you remember that, don't you?

Oggigiorno sempre più prodotti sono "Made in the World" piuttosto che "Made in the UK" o "Made in France".
Pascal Lamy, direttore generale World Trade Organization

However, the concept of country of origin for manufactured goods has gradually become obsolete as the various operations, from the design of the product to the manufacture of the components, assembly and marketing have spread across the world, creating international production chains. Nowadays, more and more products are “Made in the World” rather than “Made in the UK” or “Made in France”.

W. J. DAWOS - BARROW'S | THE JFK FILES - PART 1

W.J. Dawos & Co.
126 Queensbury Avenue NOWHERELAND

Il Calzaturificio Dawos/Barrow's raccontato da Erminio Zaffaroni
The shoe factory Dawos/Barrow's remembered by Erminio Zaffaroni.

"The shoe factory Dawos was a customer of mine. I had first made some works for Celestino Grassi, the owner, and then for his son Luigi. I remember Luigi as a delivery boy speeding around with the Lambretta. They had a nice shoe lab. Customer’s list included several players from A.C. Milan like Salvadori and Chiarugi.

Barrow's FRAMED!
Cubist Union Jack

They created the brand W.J. Dawos as if they were from the U.K., but actually they were from around the corner, San Vittore Olona, Italy.
For years, those who drove by their store on the Sempione state highway, they could see a projecting sign reciting “Dawos, the craftsman of the Kennedy’s”. It was an event when Celestino Grassi got a wire from the White House to produce a pair of shoes for President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. The local press reported the news. In the store they kept the prototype model and newspaper clippings.

When Grassi closed down I collected everything that was left: samples, leather skins, soles, even the framed Union Jack Barrow’s logo, a side brand they created in 1968. Again it was promoted as ‘from the U.K.’ and it was very popular among some circles in the Milanese area".

A brand of its time, Barrow's peaked in the 1980's; Luigi Grassi passed away in November 2012 at 81.

FOOTNOTE

"Some circles": meaning fascists called "sanbabilini" who assembled around Piazza San Babila, Milan. No English Wikipedia page about them: if you read Italian go here.

W.J. DAWOS/BARROW'S | THE JFK FILES - PART 2 - PAPER CLIPPINGS

Xerox copy of the daily newspapers. Dates and names unknown. 1.5 MB of forgotten history. Italian only.

You know, journalists. Both captions says "it's the presidential shoe". In fact, the two shoes are not even alike; one is black, the other brown. Shoe size is 43 (8 1/2) for one; 44 (9 1/2) for the other. Both says the pair of shoes was free of charge.

NOTA A MARGINE

W.J. DAWOS/BARROW'S | THE JFK FILES - PART 3 - THE MISSING TELEGRAM

Luigi Grassi doesn't know where the telegram from the White House is. Sad but true. Rumors say it could be stored somewhere at The Fondazione Pirelli in Milan beacuse the presidential shoe had a rubber sole.

SOLITUDE AFTER 100 YEARS: Duccio Del Duca/Oregon

A sad centennial anniversary for the shoe maker Oregon (San Vittore Olona, Milan). They filed for bankruptcy on September, 2009 hoping to save the historical company re-launching the brand Duccio Del Duca (which was created back in 1985).
The local press gave the news almost as it was a normal thing because it seems all the 32 workers (43 one year ago) could be hired by other shoe makers in the district. It seems.
Right now, the only working thing is the web site.

MADE IN ITALY | BELL'IDEA!

Walter Martini, presidente Istituto Per La Tutela Dei Produttori Italiani (31-05-2010).

MADE IN ITALY | JUST A MEMO

LUCIANO BARBERA, New York Times 31 luglio, 2010.

About the law on the "Made In Italy" label
“It’s a truffa,” says Mr. Barbera one recent afternoon, using the Italian word for scam. “And I am fighting with all my strength to make people understand that this country is destroying itself in order to advance the interests of just a few people who are unfortunately members of the most powerful caste of this country.”

MADE IN ITALY 2.0

The Iceberg Concept
By WOP

MADE IN ITALY?

LUCIANO BARBERA, industriale tessile di Biella
Sbaglia chi va a produrre all'estero. Così scomparirà il "made in Italy"

Peggio: 'profumo d'Italia'.
(Libero, 29/01/2004)

LUCIANO BARBERA, clothier in Biella
It’s wrong to go abroad to produce. Doing so the “made in Italy” will disappear.

Of course they are wrong. We need to emphasize the Italian production as a mark of quality and, in the end, prices will benefit of it. I heard about products ‘styled in Italy’ or ‘designed in Italy’. Even worse ‘parfum du Italy’. Foolish things that will lead to the disappearance of the made in Italy. It’s necessary to get an ID of every product.
(Libero, 01-29-2004)

New York Times, September 12, 2010
It is a “Made in Italy” problem: enabled by Italy’s weak institutions and high tolerance for rule-bending, the Chinese have blurred the line between “Made in China” and “Made in Italy,” undermining Italy’s cachet and ability to market its goods exclusively as high end.

“This could be the future of Italy,” said Edoardo Nesi, the culture commissioner of Prato Province (and novelist NdA). “Italy should pay attention to the risks.”
