THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR STOMPING | DOCS TRIBUTE | TBAMFW # 5 | BOUNCING SOLE EDITION

Dr. Martens is among the few brands that represents both fashion and anti-fashion. Birth date is 1 April 1960, hence the model 1460 which is still in production.

The rise to the top started with the movie "Tommy", based on the Who's record of the same name (1969, Track/Polydor). Elton John, as The Champ, wore the giant stilt boots; at first Elton refused the role but later accepted it on the condition to keep the boots.

Elton at the Museum

Today the stilt boots are owned by R. Biggs (maker of the dr. Martens) but kept at the Northampton Museum & Art Gallery. They were bought at a sale from The Champ.
As much as the yellow stitching, another thing peculiar is the "Air Cushion Sole" also known as "bouncing sole".

The Bouncing Souls
1994 - The Good, The Bad And The Argyle (BYO)

The Bouncing Souls from New Jersey never put Docs on the cover of their records but they choose a great name nonetheless.

Doc Marten
1989 - One Land To Care For  (Rock-O-Rama)

Also from NJ are the DOCTOR MARTEN: "One Land To Care For" is their first and only album and it's nothing to write home about. Not to mention the band being known as "nationalistic" even though without known connections with nazis or fascist groups.

1969 | Symarip

Yes, the nazi-skin: all of them PROUD Docs owners. They got so big in the mainstream culture that nobody know that skins were (are) a different branch altogether. The proof is the anthem "Skinhead Moonstomp" (1969, Trojan) by the Symarip, the band that retitled Nancy Sinatra's biggest hits.

...and who were the good (bad) guys...

The Oppressed
1984 - Oi! Oi! Music!  (Oppressed Records)

Before plastic idols like Jared Leto and Avril Lavigne, the Docs got the boost from punk rock and OI.

VV.AA. - 1982 - Oi! Oi! That's Yer Lot
(Secret Records)

"OI! OI!

"OI! OI! That's Yer Lot" it's the fourth installation of the compilation series created by Sounds journalist Gary Bushell, the one who spread the OI word/genre all over. All bands from the U.K. but one (Black Flag!)

The Strike - 2004 - The Oi! Collection
(Captain OI)

The very same iconic picture of "That's Yer Lot" grace the posthumous release by The Strike, great band of the first OI wave (they appeared on the second Bushell's comp "Strenght Trough OI" (Decca 1981).

VV.AA. - 1984 - Goot From The Boot
(Splittle)

Historical hardcore/post-punk Italian compilation. Worth of note are the Juggernaut, Grey Shadow and Putrid Fever. It deserves a re-release.

VV.AA. - 1999 - Give 'Em The Boot Vol. II
(Hell Cat Records)

Street-punk comp series by Rancid's Tim Armstrong. Photo by Jesse Fisher, graphic/photographer who does lot of Epitaph/Hell Cat graphics. It's the same picture in five different colors for volumes from 2 to 6.

The Business
1996 - Death II Dance CD EP ( Taang!)

Another punk/OI institution: they aged well judging by "Death II Dance". Also they inspired someone along the way.

Raise A Flag (Tokyo) - 2007 - I Never You Never 7"
(Defenders Of The Rising Sun)

1460 é stata fatta a mano.

In 2003 Dr. Martens closed almost all the U.K. factories in order to move production to China. 1000 people lost their jobs. Quality complaints ensued and Dr. Martens brought back in the U.K. the "vintage line" (2007). The 50th anniversary mod. 1460 was hand-made.

VV.AA. - 2010 - DM50: The Album

Buzzcocks).

To celebrate the anniversary, Dr.Martens asked 10 artists/bands to record cover versions of classic tunes that represents the brand. No one was called from the zillion of bands who helped spread the Docs word and they opted for easy electronica and plastic rock. So, in return we got - among others - the worst cover versions ever of "Ever Falling In Love" (Buzzcoks) and "If the Kids Are United" (Sham 69).

Come sempre: moda e anti-moda.

Let me put it this way: the comp seems inspired by the recent collaborations with J.P. Gaultier and Hello Kitty (Hello Kitty ??).
The only exception being the (really) old guard: a strange but fitting cooperation between MC5's Mike Davis (RIP) and Canuck punks D.O.A.
The album used to be available as a free download from the Dr. Martens website (not anymore) and nowadays can be found with a little net search.

In 2010 Dr. Martens won two awards at the Fashion Show in New York: 01 - most popular men's footwear in latest fashion; 02 - best counter-cultural footwear of the decade (decade?).
Once again: fashion and anti-fashion.
