1972 | [ILLUSTRATED] STYLE LESSON | THE WHITE WITCH REVIEWED BY LESTER BANGS |

1972 | LEZIONE DI STILE [ILLUSTRATA] | LESTER BANGS RECENSISCE I WHITE WITCH.

White Witch - 1972 - S/T (Capricorn)| BACK

The Astronauts - 1964 - Everythings is A-OK! (RCA Victor)

Dieci anni fa lo avremmo trovato su un disco degli Astronauts indossando una giacca gialla dal risvolto stretto;

The Beatles - 1964 - Meet The Beatles (Capitol)

cinque anni fa avrebbe provato imbarazzo per il suo nuovissimo caschetto alla Beatles;

Love Battery - 1994 - Nehru Jacket (Polygram)

White Witch - 1972 - S/T (Capricorn)| FRONT

Beatle pudding-bowl & nehru jacket

OK, ma come suonano i White Witch? Fantastici!

"Look at the back cover of this album: now observe the dude standing on the left.

It is ineluctable fact that beneath all that makeup, silk, Beelzebeads and hoodoo-voodoo drag, he's a true dork. One look confirms it.

He could be standing in a yellow thin-lapeled suit on an Astronauts album a decade ago, or nervous under a brand-new Beatle pudding-bowl halfway between then and now, or solemn in his Nehru jacket with a New Dehli Tourist Throwrug hanging on the wall behind him a year or two later …

… so here he is now, made up like an acid transvestite, and not only his masculinity not compromised a whit but he's unmistakably that same dork. The rest of the group is no different.

What do they sound like? Great! Grunge noise and mystikal studio abstractions, better than most of Black Oak's stuff, vocals and organ and other things quite Deep Purple, and if you've got any sense of humor or no standards at all you'll love 'em."

NOTE FOR THE DIGITAL NATIVES

Beware: the White Witch are no Mudhoney, nor Nirvana; back in 1972 Black Oak Arkansas released "Keep The Faith " but today only die-hard fans know them; it's easier with Deep Purple but Lester is referring MK1's Deep Purple. [i.e. before "In Rock"]. The rest is a lesson of style still valid nowadays.
