ALDO SACCHETTI: A ROYAL SHOEMAKER
by Irma Vivaldi

Sacchetti’s shoes are a product of high-level craftsmanship, the result of shape's careful refinement. Crystal embroidery, stitchings in pure gold and heels embellished with gold leaves, make Sacchetti's real works of art.
From the press release of a Sacchetti Exhibition held at the Footwear Museum of Vigevano - 2005

Aldo Sacchetti passed away 14 February, 2012. The year before an interview with the shoemaker was already lined up, but he thanked me and declined the offer: the years have exacerbated his shy temper.

An official bio doesn't exists, so what follow is a research of the press of the time augmented by the priceless assistance of Armando Pollini, Footwear Museum of Vigevano's artistic director.

Born in 1922, Aldo Sacchetti spent sixty years of his life among shoes. It all began in 1933 - 11 years old - when he began working at his father's shop. As a child his ambition was to become a carpenter, but soon he deeply fell in love with the shoemaking job and the creative side of it. He loved it so much that his workday used to last twelve hours and found it impossible to stay away from his lab. He also used to return back there to read the newspaper on Sunday morning.

His shoes were chosen by well known celebrities such as Maria Callas, Audrey Hepburn and even by Queen Elizabeth. Among his clients were the wives of prominent politicians and ladies of Turin's aristocracy and his collections were under the spotlights for the haute couture creations in Turin and all over Italy.

In 1948, when 26, he left his father's shop to open his first one in Via Arsenale, Turin:

"two very small and narrow rooms where I used to spend the whole day to sell shoes. Later in the evening I had to run back to my lab", he told Marina Cassi in a 1984 interview for the daily "La Stampa".
