Le riprese del film dovevano essere effettuate a Vigevano, ma non fu così semplice.
Il provveditorato agli Studi di Pavia negò la possibilità di effettuare riprese all'interno delle aule vigevanesi, soprattutto per il quadro desolante del tipo di insegnamenti che vi venivano impartiti fatto da Mastronardi nel romanzo. Le proteste degli insegnanti erano accese e così le scene scolastiche furono realizzate nella locale casa di riposo.
The shooting of the film had to be done in Vigevano, but it wasn’t that simple.
The Education Authority of Pavia denied permission to shoot in Vigevano’s classrooms, for the bleak picture of teaching systems given by Mastronardi and the teachers protests. So the school scenes were made in the local nursing home.

Quanto al mondo della calzatura, nel film è ancora più presente che nel romanzo e diventa addirittura invadente. Sin dalle scene iniziali, una serie di riprese dall'alto ci fa capire subito qual è il contesto: una città dove sono fiorite le grandi industrie, ma soprattutto dove sono proliferate, casa per casa, le aziendine artigianali e il lavoro a domicilio. Le scatole da scarpe si ammassano sui ballatoi, nei cortili e nei soggiorni delle abitazioni. E ai dialoghi fa spesso da colonna sonora il battere ripetuto del martello sul deschetto.
As for the footwear field, it is even more present in the film than in the novel, sometimes even intrusive. Right from the opening scenes, some shots from the sky tell us immediately about the context: a city with many large factories and full of small artisanal productions and home working. The shoe boxes are piled up on balconies, courtyards and living rooms of the houses. And the soundtrack for the dialogues is often the repeated beat of the hammer on the workbench.
